Year 7, 8 & 9 Good Standing Policy

Year 7, 8 & 9 Good Standing Policy

Year 7, 8 & 9 Good Standing Policy

1.0     Rationale

At Lesmurdie Senior High School we believe that it is essential to clearly state the standard of performance necessary for students to succeed at school and be well placed to enter post-school destinations of their choice.  Teachers will communicate the standards required by providing:

  • a subject outline
  • an assessment outline
  • information on attendance, attitude, behaviour and effort requirements.

The Good Standing Policy establishes minimum standards and expectations in relation to Commitment, Academic Performance and  Attendance.  Student achievement of the standards will be either Advanced, Good or Conditional.

Students who achieve Advanced Standing in a semester and year will receive an Advanced Standing pin and Certificate at a whole school assembly.

2.0    Standards

          2.1   Commitment

All students will be given the opportunity to engage in a relevant and meaningful curriculum. Students are responsible for giving themselves every opportunity to achieve to their full potential. Student commitment can be demonstrated through the attitude, behaviour and effort attributes on the semester report which reflect:

  •        Working to the best of their ability
  •        Showing respect for self and others
  •        Cooperating and building positive relationships
  •        Being enthusiastic about learning and setting goals
  •        Showing confidence in making positive choices and decisions

          2.2         Academic Performance

All students will be provided with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to enable them to achieve to the best of their ability.

          2.3         Attendance

There is a very strong connection between the academic performance of students, their attendance and subsequent participation in the learning program.  Absence is likely to impact on a student’s ability to understand the material covered and to successfully complete the assessment program to the best of their ability.

In calculating the standings, an absence will not count if it is for medical reasons or state/national sport representation.

3.0   Standings

Students will achieve one of three standings;

  • Advanced Standing – Academic and Commitment
  • Good Standing
  • Conditional Standing.

        3.1      Advanced Standing – Academic

Students are deemed to have excelled in relation to the Academic standard when they have achieved the following levels of performance in a semester:

  •  Academic Standard – Minimum Learning Area Grade average 4.40 in a Semester (Learning Area Grade average calculated using A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1)
  •  Attendance Standard – 90% attendance (or better) within a semester.
  •  Commitment Standard – Obtain at least 60% Consistently and Often attributes on the Semester report.

         3.2    Advanced Standing – Commitment

Students are deemed to have excelled in relation to the Commitment standard when they have achieved the following levels of performance in a semester:

  •  Commitment Standard – obtain at least 95% Consistently attributes on Semester Report with no Sometimes or Seldom
  •  Attendance Standard – 90% attendance (or better) within a semester.

         3.3      Good Standing

On enrolment, all students commence on ‘Good Standing’.  Students who are deemed to have maintained Good Standing in a semester will have achieved the following levels of performance in relation to the standards:

  • Commitment Standard– obtain at least 60% combined Consistently and Often Attributes on Semester Report
  • Attendance Standard – 90% attendance (or better) within a semester

         3.4      Conditional Standing

Students are deemed to have performed below an acceptable level in relation to the standards when they have exhibited one or both of the following levels of performance in a semester:

  • Commitment Standard – obtain less than 60% combined Consistently and Often Attributes on Semester Report
  • Attendance Standards – below 90% attendance within a semester

In this circumstance, Lesmurdie Senior High School will undertake a number of intervention strategies designed to support  improvement to an acceptable level.  These interventions may include a meeting with the student, their parents and a school delegate to develop an individual improvement plan.

Students on Conditional Standing status may lose the privilege to attend extra and co-curricular events.
