Welcome to 2020

Welcome to 2020

Welcome back
Welcome to all new and current students, staff and families at Lesmurdie SHS. As we prepare to begin the 2020 school year, please find in this email, important information for all students and parents.
First Day program – Monday 3/2/2020
When the siren sounds at 8.42am, students should move to the designated areas:
Year 7: J Block
Year 8: Corral
Year 9: Upper E block
Year 10: PA
Year 11: Gym
Year 12: SS Common Room
Don’t worry, there will be plenty of signs and plenty of staff to direct students. A map of the school can also be found on the school website.
Students will be provided with their timetables and will attend a short year group assembly, before heading off to Period 1 and the start of the 2020 school year. Teachers will inform students about what to bring for future lessons in each subject area.
The first few days of the Term are predicted to be very hot. We are very mindful of keeping students healthy and hydrated during the hot weather. Please encourage your child to bring a hat, wear sunscreen and bring water. Students are able to refill their water bottles and are allowed to bring water (only) into class.
Mobile phones in 2020
As you are all aware, the Education Department of Western Australia’s Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools Policy comes into effect on Monday. This means that use of mobile phones, smart watches and other mobile electronic devices is prohibited once a student enters the school grounds (past the boundary fence and gates) until they leave. Mobile phones must be switched off and placed in bags and smart watches put in flight mode. Full details of the mobile phone policy have been sent to you previously and can be found on the school website at http://www.lesmurdie.wa.edu.au/about-lshs/policies/. We look forward to your support with implementing this change.
Please be aware that following our previous trials and information provided in Term 4 last year, there will be no warnings regarding the ‘off and away in school bags all day’ starting Day 1, 2020 and consequences as outlined in the policy will apply. (Phones will be confiscated and parents required to pick them up on behalf of their student). Please remind your students to be well aware of this change this year.
Coronavirus
The school has received the following information from the Department of Health to share with parents/caregivers.
1. People who have been in contact with any confirmed novel coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure;
2. Returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.
Full details of the release are available at:
https://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Coronavirus
If these recommendations apply to your child, please contact the absentee line on 9291 1215.
Uniform Shop
All appointments at the Uniform Shop have been filled. We currently have a very high demand and are working hard to accommodate all students. The Uniform shop opens at 8.15am on Tuesday morning, no appointments are necessary on Tuesday.
Please note that the Rugby style jumper is no longer part of the school uniform and should not be worn.
BYOD
Our IT Working Party are investigating all options for the best BYOD device for 2021. We are currently researching the best device to achieve a balance between computer functionality and value for money. We hope to have some information for you in the near future. We are committed to informing parents before the end of term.
Compass
This year LSHS is introducing Compass, a student information platform designed to provide us with up to date attendance and behaviour data. It can also be used as a parent communication platform. We hope to introduce the Online Excursion module by the beginning of Term 2. This will allow parents easy online excursion information along with consent.
Connect
Connect is the Department of Education tool that provides parents with a myriad of information including student course outlines and lessons, teacher communication and assessment submission. I encourage you to log into your Connect account to keep up to date with student schedules. Our Facebook page and our website have lots of information, please make sure you check these regularly.
School Contacts
There are changes in some roles for this year. Please note the following key contacts for your child.

Senior School Manager – Emma Gallagher
Senior School Coordinator – John Armstrong and Monique Ryan
Lower School

P&C
Our P&C is seeking two parent representatives from each year group to join the P&C. It is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with your child’s journey through High School, meet other parents and make a contribution to our school. If you are able to assist and haven’t already contacted the school, please email your expression of interest to Katharine.harrington@education.wa.edu.au.
The P&C AGM will be held on Monday 17 February at 6.30pm. This is the perfect opportunity to find out a little more about the roles and responsibilities of the P&C. We look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes for a wonderful school year.
