Year 9 students had the opportunity to go on an excursion to the District Court in Perth City. We all felt on edge and excited, not knowing what to expect. The bus ride went by quickly since we all had fun chatting, singing and listening to music. When we got to the Court House Museum, we took a few pictures and had a quick tour of the place. Before we went inside, we had to put away our belongings, empty our pockets and were then divided into two groups. My group re-enacted a murder trial. We were all assigned parts such as the accused, witnesses, prosecution and defense lawyers. We all concluded that a miscarriage of justice had occurred and an innocent man had died.
After we finished, our tour guide walked us over to the District Court. Once we were inside, we got a little nervous as we realised just how serious this was. We had to walk through a machine and had security guards check if we were carrying anything dangerous.
Our first court case was about a middle-aged man who drove his car in a very dangerous manner on the road. The court itself was very modern with lots of computers and comfy chairs. We were all quite surprised as it was unlike the old courthouse which had wooden furniture. One hour later, we went back to the Court House Museum to gather our belongings for the bus ride home. What an interesting and eventful day!
