The Languages Department conducted an excursion for the students of Italian in Year 10. Students are currently learning the Italian language through the contexts of Italian immigration and contribution to our local community, Western Australia and the global community. This excursion has clear educational links to the WACE syllabi in Years 11 and 12, providing relevant background knowledge before students enter the WACE courses.
More than one third of Western Australia’s population was born overseas so, fittingly, students commenced the excursion at the Western Australian Maritime Museum. The Museum is symbolic of Fremantle’s past, present and future and contains theImmigration Collection that documents maritime immigration into WA.
After the tour at the Museum students walked through Fremantle, una passeggiata italiana and lunched at Sandrino Café & Pizzeria where the pizza chef and his colleagues demonstrated the art of pizza making and provided information about the origins of this pizzeria. We visited Dolce Vita Gelato, owned and managed by Italians. Finally, the students travelled to Galati’s and Princi’s at Romano’s. These arefamily owned and operated shops delivering the best Italian food and quality fresh and gourmet meat.
