The Mock Trial Competition is a challenging competition based on real court processes held in the Supreme Court of Western Australia with real lawyers acting as judges, but using mock evidence.
Twelve Year 11 Politics and Law students made their way to the Francis Burt Law Chamber in the Perth CBD as guests of their coach and former Lesmurdie SHS student Dr Jessica Henderson to get suited up and make their final preparations for their first round – and Lesmurdie’s inaugural – Mock Trial. Having undergone two weeks of intensive preparations including two Sunday morning preparation sessions, the Mock Triallers were nervous, but well prepared for their first contest.
In this first round Lesmurdie fielded two teams of Year 11 students (each with six members taking on the roles of two barristers, an instructing solicitor, two witnesses and a judges’ associate) and both teams represented the defence in a criminal charge involving common assault. With the wise counsel of Dr Henderson our team members went in well prepared.
Both trials were very competitive with skilful legal performances on both sides. The results were very close with Rossmoyne defeating Lesmurdie team Hawke 139-134 and defeating team Curtin by 115-108. Despite not winning, this was a very strong performance from our debutant mock trailers against established Year 12 Rossmoyne teams. Congratulations go to our competitors for their strong preparation and confident start, and thanks go to our coach Dr Henderson who helped our students develop their skills to such a high standard in such a short time.
Onwards to Round 2!
