The Lesmurdie SHS trip to Cairns is regarded as one of the best Outdoor Education experiences amongst schools in Western Australia. This year’s trip had the students gaining valuable knowledge and skills in white water paddling and rescues on the Tully River, south of Cairns. A number of craft were used including boogie boards and small inflatable boats, where students learnt how to navigate a fast flowing river and maintain a high degree of safety along the way. The highlight this year happened on the final day of paddling with inflatable kayaks being used for the first time. Students paired up and took on the amazing rapids of the lower section of the mighty Tully River, putting into practice the skills learned over the previous three days. Rapids named ‘Junction’ and ‘Surprise, Surprise’ had everyone’s senses on high alert, however some students still found out the hard way why it’s called “Surprise, Surprise”.
The group then travelled back to Cairns to enjoy a multitude of adventure activities including mountain biking on the world championship course and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. Sheldon Fazio once again displayed his incredible mountain bike skills learned from Mrs Dowsett, to continually do flips over the handle bars of his bike only to roll onto his feet every time and continue riding these gnarly trails.
Another first this year was the opportunity to learn how to stand up paddle board on the Mossman River. It was an amazingly relaxing day paddling along a beautiful river amongst the world’s oldest rainforest. At times it felt like we were meditating and paddling at the same time.
A big thank you goes out to Mrs Dowsett, who always gives up her time on the April holidays to make this trip truly amazing. Miss White, who joined our group this year for the final time, and Dan Cook,(former LSHS student studying Outdoor Education at Notre Dame Uni), are also to be thanked for helping make this a trip of a lifetime for our students.
We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
