Senior School Dance students with Lower School Dance Extension students performed at the South of the Swan Dance Festival. During the day, students also attended intensive dance workshops at the prestigious King Street Art Centre – home of AusDance and dance companies such as CO3, The Community Arts Network and The West Australian Youth Theatre Company.
The first workshop was Hip Hop Grooves, with Lisa Crowe. Lisa is originally from NSW and has taught in Sydney and Perth, including at the renowned Brent Street Studios and Urban Dance Centre. She competes in Hip Hop battles throughout Australia and is the creative director of Fringe Festival Show, Cultural Renegades.
Students were then treated to a Musical Theatre/Broadway Jazz workshop by Charisse Parnell, Director of The Dance Collective, who has also lectured at WAAPA and choreographed for the likes of The Veronicas and Jessica Mauboy.
Finally, students were taught a Lyrical dance workshop by McKenzie Goldsmith, a prominent Contemporary Dance Teacher in Perth and who also directed her own Fringeworld show this year.
Dance students at Lesmurdie SHS cover practical and theoretical components of Hip Hop, Contemporary and Jazz Dance, however this was a wonderful opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge and dance styles, as well as experience a “day in the life of a professional dancer”.
After an intense stage rehearsal in the morning and then three hours of dancing, students returned to UWA to perform at the Octagon Theatre, among other schools for the evening. Throughout the day and evening, students were praised by UWA technical staff and organisers, teachers from other schools, plus workshop teachers for their professionalism and high level skill.
This was the first time that Lesmurdie SHS has participated at the South of the Swan Dance Festival and it was great to watch the unity among student across all year groups in assisting one another with choreography through the term, and then supporting each other throughout the day. Thank you to all students for your dedication, extra rehearsals and putting on two stand-out, high energy, entertaining performances! Thank you also to Miss Valdrighi for attending the excursion and to all friends and family who were in the audience, for your amazing support!
